Improvisation Ensemble for Musicians & Dancers (MPF4233.01)

Michael Wimberly, Susan Sgorbati

This advanced course focuses on the performance of improvisation. For musicians, special attention is given to creating rhythms and sonorities which can then be manipulated and developed while interacting with dancers in the moment. Musicians should have basic skills on their instrument and be able to create and convey a sense of form to other musicians in an efficient way. Musicians will also create written compositions using graphics, texts, traditional and non-traditional forms as well as learning the basics of conduction (an improvisational conducting form created by Butch Morris). Both dancers and musicians will meet together on Mondays and meet separately for their other class time. Musicians will meet Mondays and Tuesdays.

Corequisite: Dance Workshop (Thursday 7 – 8:30 pm). Dance or Drama lab assignment.
