The Art of Mediation and Negotiation (MED2107.02)

Peter Pagnucco

There is no getting around it—conflict happens—it’s a natural and inevitable part of being human.  How we address conflict can have a profound effect on our lives.   This hands-on course teaches the art, skills and process of resolving conflicts through negotiation and mediation.   Students will learn by doing as they participate in daily exercises and role plays designed to develop mediation and negotiation skills, and the understanding of how conflicts may be resolved constructively in practice.  They will also read the classic texts on interest-based negotiation (“Getting to Yes”) and mediation (“The Mediator’s Handbook”).  Students will submit a reflection essay or short project at the conclusion of the course.  A certificate for a 24‐hour mediation training will be issued to each student who completes this course successfully.
