Movement Practice: Intermediate-Advanced Dance Technique (DAN4148.01)

Russell Stuart Lilie

In this Intermediate-Advanced movement class, we will work on establishing a day-to-day practice of evaluating and fine-tuning our dancing bodies through guided self-examination and peer-to-peer feedback. At the core of developing our practice, we will be learning to accomplish the same movement with ever changing bodies and minds.

We will focus on anatomical economy by addressing alignment, effort, and release. Noting the difference between distal and central movement, we will examine how we absorb, store and redirect energy, and how this energy creates new movement. Warm-up will begin with stretching, articulating, and stabilizing our bodies. These exercises will develop into longer, more dynamic and rhythmic phrases, with an emphasis on performance quality and nuance.
