Movement Practice: Non-Stop Moving (DAN2358.01)

Kota Yamazaki

When I first started studying butoh at the age of 18, I had a desire to dance anytime and anywhere. On a subway on my way to the dance studio, I practiced my stillness and internal dance without being noticed by anyone. Since then, I believe that dance can happen in any situation and environment by taking various different forms throughout our daily lives.

In this class, as the course title indicates, we will experience and explore ever-changing movement and dance that will never stop throughout the class time.

We can do this in a public space, in a bathroom, in a classroom, in nature—

Conversation Dance, Debate Dance, Economy Dance, Muddy Dance, Trash Dance, Transmittable Dance, Sympathy Dance, Class-Planning Dance, Design Dance, Pedestrian Dance, Luxurious Dance, Sad Dance, Waiting Dance—and many more to come. The class introduces students to an active body-centered mode in the beginning of a day.

Learning Outcomes:
-Expand your perspectives on dance
-Reveal undiscovered possibilities of dance in your daily life
-Connect seemingly unrelated subjects through somatic experience
-Be able to think through the body
-Increase energetic and physical capacity and re-connect to a primitive and inherent vital force of the body
