Beginning Voice (MVO2102.01)

Kerry Ryer-Parke

Take your voice out of the shower and into the world. To sing confidently you need practical skills in vocal technique and musical literacy. Using group warm-ups and exercises, rounds and songs, we will explore and demystify voice jargon such as diaphragmatic breathing, resonance, diction, and projection, working towards a healthy, flexible sound. Fundamentals of music reading, ear training and sight singing will be introduced in class and reinforced in a separate lab or interactive software. Other topics such as International Phonetic Alphabet, belting, microphone technique, and harmonizing may also be covered according to interest. No previous voice study required, but students must be able to match pitch.
