GANAS (APA4154.01)

Jonathan Pitcher

In terms of public action GANAS remains a community-driven, cross-cultural association that provides students with volunteer opportunities to engage with the predominantly undocumented Latino migrant worker population. These opportunities are facilitated through partnerships with organizations such as the Vermont Migrant Education Program, the Bennington Free Clinic, and the Vermont Workers Center. Current members are designing and implementing an ESL program, women’s workshops, high-school counseling, researching workshops on financial literacy, conducting health surveys, maintaining a web presence, advertising, archiving the history of migration in Vermont, writing theory, considering food as a cultural artefact, furthering relationships with authority figures in the community, and continuing with social events. Primarily owing to the format hitherto, reading and discussion has generally centered on the practical, and that will certainly continue. It is hoped that the course structure for new participants will allow some time for a more theoretical approach, addressing the nature of authority, legal concerns, government policy, consulates, and possible grants. Conferences on such topics as family welfare, security, drugs (prescription and otherwise), detention, surveillance, working conditions, gender, and religion have also been floated, along with focusing on the Latin American end of such issues. Fall: 4-credit course for new participants, 1-credit group tutorial for those continuing, whose presence will be required during the final hour of class time each week. Spring: 1-credit group tutorial for those continuing. Registration for this course will begin on Wednesday, May 17 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm (during office hours) in Deane Carriage Barn 201.
