This is an introductory course to basic mold making and slip casting techniques for producing multiple components to create sculptural ceramic objects or a series of functional ware. This course focuses on the development of design concept through exploration of various casting methods, applying alteration techniques and experimenting with prototype making. Basic preparation of the material, glaze application and firing techniques will be introduced. In addition, assemblage techniques to achieve various structural forms will be incorporated in some assignments. Through several diverse assignments, we will explore prototype design, make plaster molds, and practice porcelain slip casting production to develop skills. Students are expected to conceive one independent final project based on a research assignment. Drawing/sketchbook assignments will be given throughout this course to develop conceptual approaches and skills for organizing of ideas.
