This course examines the invention and evolution of photography in the 19th century. We will be discussing the diverse applications that photography was directed towards- art, commerce, documentation, and the sciences. The various social, cultural, and political environments that enabled photography to flourish will be explored through assigned readings, lectures, and student research. We will also explore the 19th century holdings in the archives of nearby museums.
