Advanced Art History Practicum (AH4118.01)

J. Vanessa Lyon

For students considering or undertaking senior work, independent research, or combined thesis projects in art history or visual/material culture. This practicum is a hybrid methods proseminar AND writing workshop designed for advanced students with prior coursework in art history beyond the introductory level. Whether you wish to revise, amplify, or refine an existing art historical project or paper or begin to craft and research a new one (for publication, grad school applications, senior work, your own enjoyment, etc.), this seminar provides 1) an introduction to key texts and methodologies of modern art history and related fields 2) time and space for workshopping, discussion, and critique by your peers 3) required individual meetings with the instructor. Our ‘breakfast club’ will take occasional field trips to local libraries, museums, and archives. We will read deeply, critique humanely, and furiously write, revise, and proof. Seniors are welcome and curious juniors are encouraged to apply. Work produced might include: article-length studies; virtual or actual exhibition catalogues; research in support of creative work, etc.
