Historical Dress: the 1930’s (DRA2287.02)

This class will examine the clothing and style of the 1930’s. We will examine the topic in the context of Social/Political/Artistic movements and the effect and influence on Fashion and Style. Subjects we will touch on will include: the Paris couture of the era: Chanel, Vionnet, and Schiaparelli among them, American fashion designers such as Claire McCardell and Adrian, Art Deco – in decorative arts, architecture, and fashion, Surrealism, Fascism in Europe, the Great Depression, Hollywood films and escapism, Royalty and cafe society. In the literary world we will discuss John Steinbeck and The Grapes of Wrath.

Assignments will possibly include oral presentations of research, research papers and a design / research project.
