Historical Dress: The Jazz Age (DRA2286.01)

This class will examine the clothing and style of the 1920’s. We will examine the topic in the context of Social/Political/Artistic movements and the effect and influence on Fashion and Style. Subjects we will touch on will include: the Paris couture of the era: Chanel, Vionnet, and Lanvin among them, Art Deco – in decorative arts, architecture, and fashion, Surrealism, the rise of Fascism in Europe, the Harlem Renaissance, the rise of the consumer economy and the automobile, clothing and the role of women, sporting events and sportswear, and Prohibition. In the literary world we will discuss F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby.

Assignments will possibly include oral presentations of research, research papers and a design / research project.
