Light! (DRA2376.02)

Michael Giannitti

Many people recognize the beauty of a magnificent sunset or the power of a strobe light, yet few develop the acuity to make choices about controlling light in their everyday environments, or regularly consider the impact of light on their artistic practices. In this course we will work on increasing awareness of the power of light and lighting, and develop basic tools for description and design. Beginning with observation exercises, we will move to exploration of various light sources and qualities of light, including color, intensity, direction, and control, and view expressions of lighting design ideas in painting, architecture, film, theater and dance. Some very basic design assignments will involve use of light sources found in home environments. Students will be expected to document and share some work using their mobile phone cameras.
