This course, intended for students who will continue to the Advanced Film/Video Projects II course in spring 2021, will support advanced students in planning, pre-production, and early production for more complex, larger-scale, longer-duration, self-directed video projects. In fall 2020, Advanced Projects I will technically be split into one 2-credit course in the first seven weeks (Projects IA), which meets on Monday mornings, and one 2-credit course in the second 7 weeks, which meets on Tuesday mornings (Projects IB). In practice these will function as one semester-length course supporting your advanced work. Half of your work for this course will be delivered and completed asynchronously, and will include assignments that explain how to use timelines treatments, shooting scripts, storyboards, shot lists, budgets and diagrams to plan narrative, documentary, experimental and installation projects. You will also be asked to look at well-known films and videos alongside their scripts and storyboards, and watch and respond to some films about famously difficult, embattled and unfinished productions. In the other half of the class time, we will meet together, either via teleconference or on campus, to present and workshop ideas for projects, and critique your planning documents and test footage or rushes. You will also have individual meetings with the instructor and access to either a remote guest lecturer or a webinar series covering advanced color grading and 4K workflows. Overall, the course is designed to help you think through your advanced work and remain accountable to your own timeline for completing it. Prerequisite: Intermediate Video or permission of the instructor. Students may also take the 2-credit Intermediate Video Tech Intensive in the second 7-week block as a co-requisite. Please note that this course is intended for and used by seventh-term and eighth-term students with a Plan concentration in film, video, or screenwriting. Exceptions may be made only on the recommendation of a Plan committee and with the permission of the instructor.
