Coffee Clowns (DAN4183.01)

Maura Gahan

This is not a red-nose clown class, but rather one geared toward breaking open the definition of what clowning is and can be.
We will use physical theater techniques, objects, and different locations to evoke characters that are of the human form and beyond. We will experiment with both solo and group practice.

Warmups will include somatic training, cardiovascular challenges, vocalization — all of it geared toward toning and tuning the body-mind. The art of humor and fun requires discipline and the love of form. Therefore, we will wrangle, tease, and submit to compositional elements that support the inner characters that have been waiting to be unleashed. We will be making character pieces that are both choreographed and improvised (composing at the moment).

Humor is powerful. It brings groups of people together for good or for evil. Let’s go for good.
