This production course draws on the energy, intensity and criticality of avant-garde film and contemporary video art practices to introduce students to the fundamentals of working in video and the language of film form. Emphasis on technical instruction, formal experimentation, and critical vocabulary is balanced in order to give students a footing from which to find their own stakes in the medium.
Learning Outcomes:
Across this term, students will:
- complete technical exercises and assigned projects that encourage them to explore various aspects of cinematography, mise-en-scène, editing and sound design
- become more proficient in the use of cameras, lighting, sound equipment, and editing software through technical workshops, demos, and practical application
- be introduced to concepts crucial to time-based media through screenings and texts by a diverse range of artists, filmmakers, and theorists
- develop the vocabulary to critique each other’s work and to discuss contemporary moving image art
- produce a final project of their own design, after meeting with the instructor to discuss their final project proposal.
