This course serves as an introduction to rhythms and musical practices from Africa, Brazil, and the Caribbean. Using indigenous percussion instruments from these territories, students will learn to play traditional and hybrid rhythms. There will be discussions and scheduled response papers on readings, podcasts, and films pertaining to global issues from these territories, as well as an end of term presentation. Weekly practice will provide a greater experience and is anticipated. Drumming serves the greater Bennington community in the fall by partnering with South Western Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), and the Village School of North Bennington. This class usually visits these organizations with the goal of sharing what we are creating. This activity is contingent on CDC guidelines TBD.
