In this 7-week course, we will scratch the surface on how bebop managed to be a significant era in music history despite its short life span, with a particular focus on the influence of pianist Bud Powell. We will discuss the genius that Bud Powell was and read about the social climate that he and other bebop musicians lived in during that time. Discussions on racial climate of the 1940s and how that affected artistic choices among bebop musicians, along with robust listening examples, and comparable readings will help frame this iconic American music.
