This course allows students to explore the practice of photography using analog cameras and black and white film. Students will acquire basic skills in 35mm camera handling, light meters and exposure, film development, and making enlargements in the wet labs. In addition the class will research the formal and socio-political content of contemporary practitioners working globally today. Class time will include technical demonstrations and group critiques, as well as slide presentations and discussions of assigned readings. Students will be asked to complete a series of creative assignments and complete a final self-directed project which will allow them to creatively demonstrate their conceptual and technical skills as they explore their own questions and concerns.

Black and white film will be provided but students can expect to pay $50-$100 for light sensitive photo paper and extra rolls of film.

Due to limited facilities and film costs this class will be capped at 8 students maximum.
