Fundamentals of Creative Writing (LIT2394.01, section 1)

Jenny Boully

In this highly generative class, we will begin by investigating sound, music, image, and form in poetry and how these poetic elements are presented in fiction. From fiction, we will study narrative, character, plot, and setting. Finally, we will progress towards personal nonfiction, fusing the elements of our poetry and fiction investigations. We will read classical and contemporary texts from diverse authors and voices, while also crafting individualized creative work. Students are expected to also write critically on creative texts. Throughout the term, students will engage in workshops, one in each genre, with the goal of completing a mini-portfolio of revised creative works.

Learning Outcomes:
o To gain fundamental knowledge on various genres in literature through the reading of both classical and contemporary texts;
o To write one’s own creative writing in multiple genres;
o To assimilate feedback and suggestions in one’s thoughtful and rigorous revisions;
o To interpret literature across genres and provide thoughtful critical feedback on the work of one’s peers;
o To eloquently articulate criticism and theories on literature and writing in discourse appropriate to the profession of Literature and Writing.
