Patrick J. Leahy was United States Senator from Vermont from 1975 to 2023, a career that put him front and center in American history for almost fifty years. This course invites historians, politicians, and those who know Leahy best to discuss and analyze the key policies that impacted American democracy on the local, national, and international levels. We will examine how Senator Leahy’s legacy influences our daily lives and understanding of our local and national governance. This class can be taken in two sessions for 4 credits that will include readings and discussions on Mondays and guest speakers open to the public on Thursday evenings; or for 2 credits, by attending the Thursday night sessions only. We will examine the basic tenets of a democracy and how we understand policies that were shaped in the last fifty years. Taught by Senator Brian Campion, Eileen Scully and Susan Sgorbati.
