Advanced Improvisation: Scene Work (DRA4386.01)

Shawtane Bowen

In this 7-week course, we will explore different approaches to improvised scene work with an emphasis on methods that exist outside the Upright Citizens Brigade paradigm. These include more Chicago-style improv exercises and techniques, with less emphasis on ‘Game’, and more of a focus on relationship and character. What time we do spend on ‘Game’ will be with respect to ‘group games’ as they function within long form improvisation. My aim is to make you a more well-rounded improvisor. You will do hundreds of scenes. You will get better at improv. This course has 2 class shows.

Learning Outcomes:
•Learn the core elements for creating fun and watchable scenes.
•Fortify your improv acting fundamentals.
•Practice an arsenal of techniques that can be used in any scene.
•Explore physical based approaches to improv in order to create characters and relationships.
•Utilize object work and pantomime to establish relationship, character, and environment.
