The Poetics of Movement for Dance & Screen (DAN4244.01)

A hands-on seminar conducted by Elliot Caplan to teach video as a collaborative tool for exploration of movement in dance. This class is intended for those interested in developing their aesthetic sensibilities and responsiveness toward the moving image rather than learning primarily the technical aspects of filmmaking.

Cameras will be used to concentrate on framing and shot duration with emphasis placed on the clarification of the human figure moving in space.Editing will not be required during the seven-week class.

Class will comprise both production and seminar where discussion on various art topicswill lead directly to experimentation with production. Caplan’s collaborative work with choreographer Merce Cunningham will be featured and discussed along with other current projects.

Prerequisites: Some experience in dance and/or film/video; contact Dana Reitz for registration.
