The Essay Film (FV4319.01)

Erika Mijlin

An intermediate 7-week production course. Students will enter with a concept for a project ready to begin producing, and to complete by the end of the course.  The essay film has a long tradition as a film form – often departing stylistically from the social issue concerns often associated with documentary film, the essay film is a focused meditation around a theme. It may resemble prose, poetry or memoir. It may be personal or global in scope. It may illustrate, illuminate, or editorialize.

The course will function as one part viewing/discussion of examples of this form, a powerful combination of visual and rhetorical strategies – and one part workshop of projects in progress.

Prerequisites: Introduction to Video, and a project proposal submitted to instructor before registration.
