Using principles from Chinese movement practice, we will focus on the 3-dimensional spiraling form of the body in the space. The class will emphasize the breath and its connections to the mechanics of the spine, which is the main source of the fluid movements that extend throughout the body. We will work on weight shifting and cycling dynamic movement, integrating the principle of Yin & Yang. The intention is to achieve acute clarity both within the body and throughout the space. The Taoists call this “harmony of man with nature.” We will also explore spiraling forces through the partnering work of “Push Hands” (Listening Hands), and similar principles for partnering found in Contact Improvisation. We will see some video examples and will talk about the relationship of Chinese Dance with objects, i.e. “water sleeves” (extension of costume sleeves), fans, and colorful silk fabric; this emphasizes the aesthetic integration of ancient Chinese dances with opera and traditional martial arts. Non-dancers are welcome.
