This studio-seminar course will investigate painting through its history and practice at Bennington College. Using paintings in the permanent collection of the College as a starting point, we will think through the strategies deployed by artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Paul Feeley, Jules Olitski, Ann Truitt, Ralph Humphrey, and Larry Poons among others. Additionally, we will research the works of artists who studied at Bennington. Field trips to artist studios will round out the seminar portion of the course. Studio assignments will consider issues of scale, support, process, and gesture. Limited to 14 students. Prerequisite: 1 previous painting course at Bennington and permission of the instructor.
