Dollhouse, Diorama (VA4131.01)

Farhad Mirza

The poet Susan Stewart compares the dollhouse to “the secret recesses of the heart: center within center, within within within.” Paul Preciado likens a 1962 photo of Hugh Hefner beside a scale model of the first Playboy Club to similar portraits of modern architects like Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe—it suggests the “bonds of creation.” As a metaphor for interiority, or as a means to perform control, the miniature has provided rich possibilities for artists and architects, for better or worse. We will study pieces by artists who use architectural scale models in their work. Students will have the option of writing essays, or making original work related to the subject.
