Off The Chart (DRW4104.01)

Annette Lawrence

Athletes accumulate statistics. Musicians write scores. Sailors keep logs. Courts keep records. Artists turn quantitative observations into qualitative experiences. We will look at the works of Charles Gaines, Mark Lombardi, Howardena Pindell, Guillermo Kuitca, Sofie Calle, On Kawara, Alfred Jensen, and Alighiero Boetti as examples for discussion. Students will engage in the exercise of mining their telephones, calendars, book/music collections, closets, drawers, cars, etc., for information that can be used in class projects. The resulting drawings will chart, map, graph, and index the found information in a myriad of ways.

Learning Outcomes:
To use quantitative observations as material for drawings.
To know the context of similar works of art and to expand the student's knowledge of making and critiquing art.
To advance progressively through practice during the term.

Delivery Method: Fully in-person
Prerequisites: This 4000 level course is open to students who have completed at least four credits of previous work in drawing, and at least two other 4 credit Visual Art courses.
