In this course we will explore the myriad ways that sound and movement can intersect in a performative practice. Designed for students interested in compositional and co-creation strategies for both music and dance, we will consider historical and contemporary innovations in pairing sound and movement from a broad range of cultural and aesthetic perspectives. Regardless of prior expertise or disciplinary focus, all students will devise both movement and sound strategies in an environment that emphasizes play and experimentation, as well as atypical or novel ways in which these two mediums can actively inform one another.
This course is designed for sound practitioners, music and dance students who wish to expand their awareness and experience of how these mediums can be in relation to one another, and to uncover new ways of thinking about their own artistic practice in a collaborative dialogue with concepts and practices outside of their own studies. Collectively, we will explore our own assumptions about the relationships between dance and sound, and accrue tools to make deliberate choices in how these artistic mediums can inform and alter one another in confusing, surprising and transformative ways.
This course is geared towards students with a focus on music or dance, who wish to explore further how these mediums can be in dialogue. Dedicated class presence is expected, as well as the research and creation of artistic work outside of class hours.
