Historical Dress: The Great Couturiers (DRA2176.01)

This class will examine the fashions and designers of the Couture, ranging from Worth to Dior and beyond, and including Chanel, Schiaparelli, Vionnet, McQueen, and van Herpen, among others. We will examine the topic in the context of the culture: the artistic, political and technological shifts of their times. While the primary focus of the class will be the giants there will be assignments that will expand upon the topic, to explore artists and designers in more diverse situations.

Assignments will include design / research projects and research papers.


Learning Outcomes:
Students will:
- Become familiar with key figures, innovations, and artistic output from the founding of the Couture to the contemporary world.
- Understand the contributions of selected designers, within their various historical, political, aesthetic, and cultural contexts.
- Connect the work of the designers to their roles in the history of fashion, and learn to identify the period in which they worked, by examining aspects of the garments.
- Develop research and writing skill with their assignments
