This hands-on course co-taught by dance faculty Elena Demyanenko, with guests video-artists present will utilize camera/iPhone exercises, selected film screenings (to understand a range of perspectives), and improvisational games to give students an opportunity to expand and refine their own visual sensibilities with the goal of creating collaborative dance and camera interaction and multimedia projects. We will explore and analyze the creative choices available and practical tools needed when we instigate an interactive relationship between camera and movement: filmmaker and performer. Together we will attempt to develop a common language that encompasses new systems of communicating, problem solving, and making.
Coursework will incorporate formal and conceptual elements of design in cinematography within filmdance and videodance works. Students will gain proficiency in technical tools used in framing movement for the camera. We will cover camera movement, shot composition, and shooting methods as they collaborate with the performative body.
Throughout the term, students’ work will be designed collaboratively, screened and critiqued. All students will be both behind and in front of the camera. Students with no camera experience will benefit by taking Introduction to Video concurrently.
