In 1968, during the heyday of the ’60s counterculture and the turmoil of the Vietnam War, the Whole Earth Catalogue was published. The publication’s motto was “access to tools” providing readers with ‘do it yourself’ advice that could allow them to be more self-reliant and get more in touch with nature. This class is for students to envision the Future Community Catalogue 2025. What is in it now? What do the communities of our future include that we want to live in? How can we create these communities now? Topics will focus on local food production, sales and marketing, local renewable energy projects, emergency management related to climate change, local governance participation and elections, local media and journalism, public health care, local water systems, public art projects and refugee resettlement participation. Students will research local resources and opportunities for high school and college students and produce a digital catalogue with a template that can be used to collect local community resources and practical skills from communities all over the United States and globally. The Town of Bennington will feature this catalogue on their website when completed. Students are encouraged to participate from all areas of study.
