Internal Landscapes of the Listening Body (DAN2008.01) (updated course description & learning outcomes as of 10/9/2023)

Erin Ellen Kelly, MFA Teaching Fellow

Participants will be guided to listen to internal signals / intuitive responses, and how these can be shaped and articulated using imagery while remaining present to the space around them. We will dance in the studio as well as within some site specific locations. Working with prompted and self directed cues as well free form movement in solo, duet and group configurations within set increments of time we will explore the spaces between sensation, movement and action. We will use improvisation as a tool to examine where our tendencies and habits live within our movement vocabulary. We will examine these patterns and at times choose to dive deeper into them and see where they lead and at others construct limitations as prompts to open new pathways. By recognizing our tendencies we can gain more freedom. We will create conditions for latent characters, animals, and natural elements that bodies have the capacity to contain to emerge and interact with each other and the surrounding environment.

Learning Outcomes:
*Listen to internal impulses and shape external responses
*Develop spatial awareness while maintaining integrity within movement language.
*Observations of how a dance or movement phase can change depending on where it is located
*Heighten sensory awareness of dancing with other moving bodies and the space/ location in which the dance is located
*Self awareness through movement tendencies and chosen forms
*Support through witnessing and observational feedback
*Experience how imagery, environments and topography can shift movement qualities and improvisatory qualities.
