This is for advanced students (juniors and seniors) of the performing arts and visual arts disciplines who wish to find the language, both verbally and visually, that is reflective of their true creative processes, helps clarify and further their own investigations, and is readily available to present to others. Finding a public language for what is the private process of creation is an art in itself. This course addresses basic issues involved in generating, developing, producing, and presenting each individual’s artwork. It is designed specifically to support each person’s unique vision.
Part I (the verbal), led by Dana Reitz, will be held on Tuesdays; Part II (the visual), led by Dakota Pace, will be held on Fridays. In Tuesday sessions, students will write artist statements, biographical statements, curricula vitae; will write basic grants that include project descriptions, cover letters and budgets; will interview each other, and will give short lecture-demonstrations. All written work will be workshopped in class during break-out sessions, to help each other focus, edit and further refine. In Friday sessions, students will design promotional portfolios tailored to the specific needs of their work. These portfolios will have a strong focus on self-curation and graphic design as a visual language. There will be a repeating cycle of presentation, critique and response, and re-design. The work of both Parts will directly relate to and affect each other. Both Dana Reitz and Dakota Pace will be in communication throughout and will appear together in joint sessions occasionally and for final work presentations.

Learn to help others refine their own language to get closer to what they mean to say.
