The Improvising and Composing Vocalist (MVO2302.02) (new course code as of 11/1/2021)

Kyoko Kitamura

Voice is an instrument with an incredible range of expression, and there is much to explore in the realm of vocal improvisation and composition. Through a series of exercises developed for the vocal improviser, with an emphasis on strengthening the foundation of theory and ear training, students will be encouraged to think holistically about the possibilities of voice. Students will explore a different use of the voice in musical settings, including nonverbal vocal improvisation, and also compose for the voice at their respective levels. Interested students should listen to the work of Kyoko Kitamura beforehand and/or contact Kyoko to better understand her approach and process. This is not a jazz vocal class.

Learning Outcomes:
• Deepen the understanding of music theory, harmony and aural skills necessary to improvise and compose for the voice.
• Expand vocal expression in improvisation and composition.
• Experience the joy of collectively taking musical risks!
