A Brush with Western Music History 1600-1900+ (MHI2243.01)

Kitty Brazelton

This course will expose you to that “classical” stuff you always thought you should know something about—and help you to “know something.” Just a brush though—you won’t know everything. Just something. Enough to know 1) how this music affects you and why 2) how to talk about that, 3) where you—one little human—fit into the grander human scheme over time, and most important 4) how to find out more about this music (which has had such global impact on all the world’s cultures for better or for worse) when you decide you want to.

Lecture format via Zoom. Discussion. 1-2 papers. Lots of listening. Listening exams to help you organize the sounds in your mind.
